bailey oval kiln issues

hello all!

i have a oval bailey electric kiln and have been having issues w/it since i
got it....the latest problems have been burnt out elements (after firing one
day for almost 24 hours i peeped through the peepholes and saw 'dead' areas
within elementland)...i replaced them, and then the thermocouple (as the
computer screen said it was no good)...upon fixing all that, i started the
kiln for it's first (empty) run for the elements to cone 10, but it only got
to maybe 010 (dull red heat color inside) and it turned itself off.
NOW...the kiln's computer screen is blank and nothing happens when you turn
the panel from on to off....dead. any advice?? I've exhausted my avenues
and need help if anyone can offer any.

thanks!
cookie d. :)

Dear Cookie,
Call Bailey. I have always found them helpful and they stand behind
their products. They should be the best to advise you what's wrong.

I would check the kiln's switch box fuse. You can usually tell visually when
the fuse has burned out. If the fuse is okay, then check the current that
goes to the controller from the transformer. The transformer may be burned
out. A bad transformer can also burn out the switch box fuse. A bad
transformer or burned fuse will prevent the controller display from turning
on.

By the way, when the controller gives a thermocouple error message, it is a
good idea to verify that the thermocouple is bad before you replace it.
Remove the thermocouple from the board. Insert a piece of wire such as a
bent paperclip where the thermocouple was connected. Room temperature should
appear in the display. If the error message appears again, then the
controller is faulty.

I suggest checking the elements with an ohmmeter. First disconnect the power
to the kiln. If the elements are good, then be sure that you have the
correct elements. The wiring diagram may give the ohms for each element.

If the elements are okay, then check the kiln's wiring. Become comfortably
familiar with the wiring in the kiln's switch box. Locate all the parts
shown in the wiring diagram. Then patiently trace each wire to make sure
they are connected properly.

Once you become familiar with your kiln's wiring, you will be surprised at
how simple it is to repair--even on a digital kiln.

Sincerely,

Definitely talk to bailey as they can walk you thru the steps to isolate
the problem.

From what you said, it sounds like the computer controller may be fried
and/or your transformer is bad but you will have to test to find out.

Deborah, Donald,

I also have a Bailey Oval Kiln, and had terrible luck initially with the
Orton Controller that was shipped with the kiln.=20

Ray Catanzaro, (whose has a business called Kiln-Ray), did a fabulous
job re-engineering the controller, replacing the electronics with a
different make of comptroller that is much easier to program, and
replacement of the thermocouples plus an addition of a third
thermocouple since the kiln actually has three sets of elements Ray said
why not put a third level of control on there, thus giving it a middle
zone.

He did this entire modification in less than an hour and I cannot rave
enough about the value of his work. Ray is a real engineer.

The kiln is now 100% reliable, heats much more evenly, and works better
than Bailey ever could have dreamed.

this matter since dec. and was curious to see what others thought as well,
since it's taken so long to get working.

thanks!
