I am compiling an informal resource page for the conference
just some additional info about Pomona,
maps and directions to conference, tile sites to see in LA
etc., links to other sites, etc. , which may be of interest to those
traveling in.

I'll be adding to it,

go to http://www.revivaltileworks.com/arconference.html

see you there!

Hi Stephanie,

A few weeks ago I mailed in the registration material for the tile
conference. I havn't received a confirmation and being a nervous
Nellie I'm beginning to worry that my registration materials went
astray somewhere - am I in? If so, I have decided that its a little
too far for me to be driving back and forth each day and so if there
is anyone still looking for a roomie I'm available. I don't smoke,
swear only a little, but but my husband tells me that I do snore
occasionally (which I find hard to believe). My major drawback is
that I am an early riser and if someone isn't and is easily disturbed
I won't do.

Oh Goodie
Ken N. is coming to the conference. Nan too!
DuQuella tile is bringing 3 people from Portland,
Marcia, Dave and Doug are all nervous about their presentations :)
which means they will be fabulous.
and which means I should be more nervous too!
The tilesetters, Riley and Chuck
are worried that everyone will go to the Motawi session
so they are giving away a free car to anyone
who goes to their session ..(OK , NOT!)
(not knowing of course that LOTS of people are going to their session!)
I have been hearing from people
from different parts of the country who I
have never met
and who are coming to
the conference
Still a few spots left, but
yippee!
it is just about
all full up.

Steph,
two hours before I was to fly out to PA. I found my slides of the blue
mosque and hagia Sophia.
Of course I had to get out the slide scanner (evacuated from my leaking
roof - long home remodeling story) and reburn a CD. At least now I feel
good about including Turkey in my talk.
I have 138 screens in powerpoint presentation with an average of two
images per screen. Drink lots of coffee at breakfast to stay awake for
this one!
See everyone in 48 hours. I am flying in from PA. (another lobg family
responsibility story)

This probably isn't possible, but as a dreamer and a disappointed Massachusetts/USA tile
maker who cannot attend this incredible sounding conference, I would pay good $$ for a CD
or DVD which contained several of the various Powerpoint slides shows and presenter notes
for the sessions.

I hope that in the near future, it might be possible for organizers of conferences such as this
one, working in cooperation with the presenters, to digitally record the sessions and offer
DVDs for sale. This would not only raise more funds for future conferences, but it would also
allow for the techniques and wisdom of a few to reach the worldwide community of potters
who cannot afford to travel around the world for a two-day conference.

The video/audio would not have to be High Definition broadcast quality - just good enough
to view on a computer. That way the recordings could be compressed to fit a whole day's
sessions onto a single DVD. The digital media specialist who could assist with this might
agree to do this in exchange for attending the conference for free. I know I would be willing
to assist with this in the future.

Thank you Stephanie and all others who helped organize this event. I take off my hat and bow
to you for inspiring future generations of tile makers!

I don't know where to start ..
and I am hardly objective
but
the Pomona Conference was fabulous,
inspiring, fun, and I hope informative !

What a wonderful group of people!
What amazed me was that people came from everywhere
seemed like every state, plus British Columbia.
Everyone was so upbeat,
As always, the regret was , there simply wasn't enough time to have
all the conversations you wanted to have
and meet all the people you wanted to meet.
I have discovered that CLAYARTERS make fabulous conference participants

I met a number of people who identified themselves as CLAYART lurkers
who
who are inspitring, enthusiastic, experienced people..
perhaps the hidden wealth of this list!

So I want to thank the CLAYART lurkers, who came out in force!
They, along with the (non lurking) CLAYARTERS, Potter's Council
Members, TIle Heritage Foundation members
and LA area folks all converged for an intense couple of days.
I think the hardest thing was choosing between two simultaneous events
and of course , presentations were all 1-1 1/2 hours in length
short for hands on instruction.

everyone wanted to see and hear everything,
which I think is an indicator of the motivation of this wonderful
group.
Every level of experience from ,'thinking about making a tile' to
lifelong tilemakers.
I think we actually went over our target enrollment by about 15-20
people.
Danielle from ACERS did the work of 4 people, I don't know how she did
it, and seemed to have energy and smiles to spare.
TIle Heritage says the silent auction was a huge success and we raised
a nice chunk of change for AMOCA, the Malibu Lagoon Museum, Tile
Heritage Foundation and the local High School for Art and Enterprise.

Cybele Garcia and her CalPoly Downtown Center staff provided great back
up, especially for our AV needs
and their facility served us well.
The local business were really appreciative of our business and treated
us very well.
I thought the caterers did a magnificent job... the food, the
presentation, and they were so friendly too!
The AMOCA show was fabulous and they were so thrilled that we all
came to Pomona to see the Karlson exhibit..
ArtWalk night was quite a scene. Across the street from the conference,
the DA gallery had their annual cutting edge Latino art exhibit. The
most amazing parade of highly highly restored 1940's and 1950's Chevy's
circled the block and parked along the street...All completely
authentic except that were low riders, as part of the exhibit...Aztec
dancers, drums...
walking to the AMOCA reception one encountered all kinds of music and
art.
If you can picture 160 tile enthusiasts mixing with the Aztec dancers,
low riders, african drummers, industrial new wave light shows and even
a crowd of punks (yes , mohawks and nails) gathering for a
concert.......

Though I didn't sit still long enough to see any presentation in its
entirety, I saw some of every single one and I was impressed, across
the board. The level of knowledge, experience , warmth. I think
enthusiasm was rampant. Some of the presenters are truly movers and
shakers in the world of art tile.
As a presenter I must say that the enthusiastic ,receptive audience was
deeply appreciated by all of the presenters.
I also appreciate the positive feedback, and suggestions which I
received from many of you!
I left with my head buzzing, having met the most wonderful group of
folks.
I hope that all of you who came were able to glean something of value,
something inspiring, make a connection, make a new friend....

Me too Stephanie I agree with almost everything Maurice said. The
conference, the tile show and the silent auction were all great and I
went home with two great tiles that I bid on and "won". A couple of
others got away. I disagree with Maurice on one matter - about the
only thing I do well is being able to be in one place at once - but
not two, which is why I missed a couple of presentations I would have
loved to hear. Thank you for all the hard work you must have put into
this tour de force.

Well, Stephani, I can't speak for everyone there, but I, and everyone
with whom I spoke about our experiences at the conference found all
of the above to be true.

As with any conference, the downside of this one was not being able
to be in one place at once. Physics!

I was impressed by how calm you were, even when you said you weren't
(before and during your presentation). The support you got from
Acers, Potters Council, and others was impressive.

As you know, I've got very little experience in tile making, and came
to the conference to learn more about its techniques, history, and
how it might complement my functional pottery life and business.

I also attend conferences to meet and shmooze with others. Although
it's not on the agenda, I often learn more from casual and more
purposeful interactions with others than from the program itself.
This conference gave me a great deal of that. Aside from you,
Stephani, it was great to see other familiar faces, including many
from clayart, there. I didn't stay in a nearby hotel, so I didn't
get to spend as much time as others, perhaps, but I had a great time
and got a lot out of the time I spent

Although I didn't take part in the auction, it was delightful to be
able to see and handle the amazing array of tiles in the display, and
even chat with many of the makers.

And the tile display at AMOCA was simply stunning. I'm sorry I
missed Mel and Joe's exhibit this summer, but I'll certainly stop in
there anytime I'm anywhere nearby. I got to chat with Christy
Johnson, the director of the museum who also curated the show.

My thanks to you, Potters Council, and all presenters and
participants who made this a worthwhile, enjoyable conference.

Regards,
Maurice
