As I keep trying to press the mound out to get it beyond 8", it keeps
sluffing off. Cannot get it to push out further. Gotta get it further.
What do you guys have as a measurement for the greenware diameter of the
inner part of plate (which would end up being the mound size, right?) and
the outer dimension? And, of course, any advice on getting that mound
pushed out further. My arms are aching......

I usually use the rule of thumb that the rim of the plate should be about 2=
=20
inches from the foot of the plate for an average dinner plate depending on=
=20
the angle of the rim. I have found that this reduses the risk of the rim=20
warping as much. The greenware or thrown diameter would be whatever size yo=
u=20
want the plate to be plus the shrink rate of the clay you are using. I=20
believe that the problem you are having with the clay "sluffing off" is due=
=20
to the wheel head or bat being wet when you push out the clay. If the wheel=
=20
head or bat is wet, the clay won't adhere as well and will pull up or=20
"slough off" easily. Before you begin to push the clay out to the diameter=
=20
you want sponge off the bat. Hope this helps.=20

Ok,
I just got in from throwing some plates and here's what works for me:
When you are getting your pancake flattened out(I get it to about 1
1/2" smaller than the final plate width since too much flaring of the
rim causes warping with my clay body) you are aiming to create a dished
pancake with the middle being thinnest. As you start to widen the form
to throw the final rim you keep creating that dished form with your
whole hand, the way you flatten the pancake. I use my body weight
leaning on the forearm of my right hand to help with the flattening.

When you do start a hole in the middle and pull out to make walls, you
have the side of one hand resting on the wall of clay that is rising
and moving outward. So you are pushing down on the wall as you move it
outward. This keeps it from shearing. The way I do this is to pinch the
widening wall between the fingers and thumb of my right hand while
pulling outward at the same time as the outside of my right hand puts
steady pressure on the rising wall, keeping it flat and compact.

Hope this helps.
