I ordered 6 of the thin kiln shelves from Geil. They were in two boxes, 3 per
box.. They were 58 lbs per box. Three shelves in one box were great , the
other box had 3 cracked shelves,, Some one slammed the box..They were shipped
UPS
Geil took care of the shelves and sent 3 more shelves,, All 6 are in the
kiln firing as i write. I nead 6 more , just need to sell more pots to pay for
them

I really want to say :Thanks to Geil , they did a great job helping me ,
cant wait to reorder with them

Mark,
My guess is that these are silicon carbide nitride bonded shelves - correct?

If they are earlier versions of the shelves produced in China (Geil doesn't
make any shelves) and don't have expansion cuts in the shelves then I'm not
surprised they have developed cracks. This has been an issue with these
types of shelves. The newer ones with expansion cuts seem to hold up better.

As far as the warping goes, yes they need to be rotated (flipped). In fact
all manufacturers of all shelves that I have spoken with suggest rotating
shelves - with the sole exception of Advancers.

All silicon nitride bonded shelves are more susceptible to thermal shock
than regular silicon carbide shelves - especially crash cooling.

Don't have any answers regarding issues with Geil.

Howdy all,, a couple of years ago I bought 6 thin kiln shelves from Geil.. I
ended up having to flip them because they started to warp. That was OK , well
I havent fired for awhile and was looking at the kiln shelves and saw cracks
forming so I finally tried to get of someone at Geil. I would call and I was
told they would get back to me.. Well I would call every couple of weeks and
this has been going on and finally I was put on hold today and the person
finally got back and said more or less TUFF ,, I did spend $800 for the 6 kiln
shelves ,but im just out of luck..

Ive had some of my kiln shelves for more that 10 years actually ive been
here in Georgia for 10 years and I had a bunch of my kiln shelves for maybe 20
years and they are still good. I sure didn't expect new kiln shelves from a big
name kiln company warp and crack and be treated the way I was after maybe
three years of light use.

I have found out that you get what you pay for.And foolish me thinking $800
for 6 kiln shelves was pricey

Hi Mark - Get in line, I had a lot of shelves that I ordered from Geil and
had three that were broken in shipping, two years ago. I talked to the
owner and was informed that they would ship as soon as they arrived from the
supplier, I'm still waiting for the replacements - but not holding my breath
anymore. I still using the other 22 shelves and they are used weekly
without problem but I do flip them.

The spray gun they were selling at NCECA a couple years ago was a nice
bargain too until the plastic cup split, I called and was advised to send
the cup to them for replacement - I finally quit calling them after six
months and just won't do business with them for anything. I also don't miss
a opportunity to tell others about my experiences - I have discovered that
we are not alone.

I have since bought another 20 shelves from Bailey - one arrived cracked and
I received a replacement in four days. There was no way I could fault
Bailey for the breakage - the box looked like a truck was parked on it. The
spray replacement was purchased at Harbor Freight. I enjoy doing business
with people who see us as more than our credit card number - Geil does not.

I'm just glad I did not buy my gas kiln from Geil.

Mark, think about what you are asking Geil to do. Take responsiblity for shelves
you have had in your posession for "a couple of years". If you had got back with
them right after you bought them, I could see it. They have absolutely no way of
knowing how many times you have used the shelves, or how. I think too much
time has gone by.

Having said that, surely they would know if it was a wide spread problem that everyone
had. Automobile companies issue recalls all of the time for known issues. I suspect that
Geil couldn't afford to do so.

Common good business practice is to answer the phone or to call back with
in one to two day and tell you they are not going to replace them after the
first time you fire them. If you buy Chinese what do you expect other
then cheep shelves. Its just one more time you want to sell domestic pots
for a fair price but do not buy domestic made equipment.

I have to side with Mark on this one. As we are seeing from recent
posts, many people have had problems with Geil shelves. Like Laguna,
getting satisfaction from the company is nearly impossible. Laguna
has had cracking problems with their shelves almost from the time
they bought out Thoreley. My experience was 8 shelves cracking in
their first firing. Maybe more would have but that was all I'd put in
the kiln at the time. Since buying those thirteen shelves all have
cracked. Contrast this with my pre-Laguna Thoreley shelves. They have
the date stamped in them. Some date back to 1985. I never had a
Thoreley shelf fail before Laguna bought out the company. Yes, I
would get little cracks at the edges sometimes. But the shelves from
Laguna cracked half-way through in exactly the same place on every
shelf. If you stood them up together on edge every crack lined up.
Tell me this is not a production problem. I don't care how small a
company is. If it won't stand by it's products it will not last in
the market place.
