barrel firing temperatures

To really kick the heat up a notch on wood firing, use a blower to provide air!

I use a 55 gal drum cut down to 2/3 of its height. I have a hole in the
middle of the bottom with galvanized pipe attached to drop down at a 90
degree angle and go out the side 5 ft away from the barrel. I use a hair
dryer that has been modified (heating element disconnected) stuck to the
end of the pipe to blow air into the pipe. The Fire really gets HOT!! I
use this method to heat transmission casings so I can recover the aluminium
for some metal working projects I am planing.

Still on the quest of barrel firing ............ but I have yet to find much on
temperature and there is nothing like experience in
the end so here I am again begging for feedback .......

Fabienne, here you are - while Mel held me on a tether (those were the
drinking days)I checked the temperature in the hottest part of a bon fire -
and the pyrometer read, at most 1650 F. i have also fired in a barrel with
wood and propane. with wood alone the most I ever got was about 1475F. but
with propane about 2100F. (see Leon Nigrosh's book Low Fire (pg. 18 & 19)
for my drum kiln and firing information.
