Quick question about kiln shelves and placement of posts.

Will be firing to ^10 in Geil gas kiln. Kiln built to use 12" x 24" shelves.

I have old silicon carbide and new thick corderite/alumina shelves.
Plan to use thicker shelves in lower area of stacking, the thinner shelves
up higher.

What is the recommended position of posts? I've seen them arranged (#1) at
either of the long ends, two posts at one end, one post at the other. I've
also seen (#2) a post at either corner of the length, then one in the center
of the other side.

Geil's instructions advise placing a kiln shelf on the floor of the kiln.
Should pots be placed on this bottom shelf? I've always thought the bottom
shelf should be propped up off the floor to get adequate heat distribution
to the pots.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I like to post shelves with one in the middle of the long edge and 2 at =20=

the corners of the other side. You don't need to flip them, just rotate =20=

180=B0 if they start to sag. If I need to 4 post for platters or large =20=

bowls, I use wadding on top of each post.

If the floor is soft brick, the bottom shelf serves to spread the =20
weight of the stack out so posts don't eventually sink into the floor. =20=

You could use some broken chunks of shelf, a very short posts, then =20
your first shelf, if you felt that the bottom was too cool without some =20=

air space on the bottom.
