Hi Gang,

I recycle the plactic squirt mustard bottles, fill them with water & squirt away. Not too much of course but it does wonderfull things to white crackle. I can squirt loose designs so I get smaller, tighter crackle patterns where I want them. I prefer the Gulden's mustard bottles to dish soap bottles because they have a more pointed top . This gives me the illusion of greater control. Who knows, maybe it's not an illusion but that's the type of mustard I use anyway so why not recycle the plastic_. They also work great when you need to add a little water to the clay going through the pug mill when reclaiming my scrap clay..________________________________________________________________________

How very cool! ...so you squirt before you put it into reduction, or part
way through?
I'll bet you would like the bottles from hair dye as well...very small
holes. I asked a hairdresser to save them for a week for me...I got a
shopping bag full.tons

Hi Jane,
I've done both (not on the same piece ) It doesn't seem to shock the piece as much if I do it in the reduction barrell after it's cooled just a bit. I could easily be wrong on this. Try it out & see what you prefer. I found I like the mustard bottles for the water & the hair color bottles for slip trailing. Since I do my own hair there's never a shortage of them around. I use a hand mixer purchased at the thrift store to make the slip COMPLEATLY free of even the smallest of lumps then pour it into the bottle & trail away! Usually I pull the gooey slip from my reclaim bucket so there's less mixing needed & I know the clay bodies will fit.
NOW GO RAKU SOMTHIN' !

The mustard bottle sounds most interesting but I'm not sure I understand the
timing. Do you squirt before you put the pots into the reduction or is it
something you do immediately upon removing them from the fire? I would
really appreciate your clearing this up for me.....Mildred Herot

OFFLINE OFFER.
Is there anyone who wants a good Mustard Recipe ? ? ? {No charge} only a
kind smile.
It's easy to make and becomes hotter the older it gets.
We make a batch about every 2 or 3 months.

Kind Regards,

Brian C {Croc} in South Oz. slangivan@dodo.com.au

Now I'll just have to buy some of that mustard the next time I'm visiting my
mother-in- law in Oregon!
The raku pieces are bisqueing...I can hardly wait!
Jane, on Vancouver Island where Guldens is unknown.
My find for mixing small bits of things is a very small paint mixer...about
a 1 1/2 inch plastic disk on a metal shaft that goes into your drill...great
when you just have a narrow cup of something.

Hi Mildred,
When I start feeling a little chicken about shocking my piece I'll do it in the barrel but then I only do it on the "up" side. If I squirt before the reduction I like to be safe (& you should too) I'll put the pot on a piece of kiln shelf raised off the ground with bricks well away from the kiln then squirt. I suggest trying both methods, one pot before it goes in & one pot after it's in to see what gives you the results you like best. When I do it on my white crackle glaze I like to let my pot sit for a few min. anyway before it goes into the "barrel". Sorry I wasn't very clear in my first post.
