problems with my rr floating blue

updated wed 27 jul 05

My tried and true Floating Blue (ala Ron Roy) suddenly doesn't seem to fit
my clay body. It looks the same, but my pots are pinging like crazy. I may
have SLIGHTLY underfired the last load- can that be the culprit?

Yep- once again I have a big honkin' bucketful of a glaze that isn't
working!

I used to use RR Floating Blue - when it's good, it's great -

but if it's Tuesday, or the kiln underfired or overfired by 3 degrees, or it
is a full moon, or....

I would put one of the pieces back into your next glaze load and re-fire it.
If the problem was the temp, sometimes that will take care of it. If it
works, just re-fire the whole load.

I use Chappelle's floating blue. It is my tried and true. Never have a
problem with it, EXCEPT when I overfire and then it goes snot green.

Re-fire a piece and see if that solves the problem.

Inconsistency in materials is the bane of a potters existence. There may
have been a slight change in the formulation of the clay you get from
your supplier, or in one or some of the glaze ingredients you use, even
a change in the chemicals used in the water treatment plant that
supplies your water that could have triggered you problems. It's hard to
know. When all else fails, test, test, test.

BTW, I always use distilled water in mixing my Floating Blue.

Good Luck,

Hi Carole,

Mix up a small batch - if that misbehaves as well then you probably mixed
it up right the first time - then we have to suspect the clay body - is it
a new batch.

I used the floating blue as a demo in my glaze calc course a few weeks ago
- here are the three recipes.

The one with spodumene has a fairly low expansion - I would try a 50/50 mix
of 2 and 3 first - if that still crazes then go to #3

Original FB with GB

Neph Sy - 45.5
Gers Borate - 26.0
Silica - 19.5
EPK - 5.0
Rutile - 4.0
Red Iron Ox - 2.0
Coblt Carb. - 1.5
Total 103.5
Expan - 517

#2 - GB out and F3278 in.

Neph Sy - 17.0
F3278 - 35.5
Talc - 3.5
Wollast - 6.5
EPK - 26.5
Silica - 8.0
Rutile - 4.0
Red Iron Ox - 2.0
Coblt Carb - 1.5
Total 103.5
Expan - 502.8

#3 Neph Sy out - Spodumene in.

Aussi Spod - 14.0
F3278 - 35.5
Talc - 3.5
Wollast - 6.5
EPK - 26.5
Silica - 10.0
Rutile - 4.0
Red Iron Ox. - 2.0
Coblt Carb - 1.5
Total - 103.5
Expan - 410

They all looked pretty much the same - no green - fired to cone 6 tip
almost touching the shelf - like 5 oclock.
