central new jersey - studio/classes/supplies?

updated mon 8 aug 05

Kristina on tue 21 jun 05

Hello Everyone,

Just moved to central New Jersey (few miles east of Princeton). Looking
for recommendations on studios/facilities with access to a high-fire gas
kiln. Willing to sign up for throwing classes if necessary.

Also, any recommendations for local pottery supply stores (clay, glazes,
tools, etc.)?

Thanks!
Kristina

Kristina,
My only suggestion would be to go to Bucks county community college. They have 2 gas kilns, 4-5 electric, a raku kiln (which never gets used) and they just finished building the salt kiln and its been fire 3-4 times with decent to good results. You could audit the classes, and do pretty much what you want. Its in Newtown Pa. Its a 25-30 min drive from the center of Princeton. The most loads are fired to cone 8-9. There are some other good teachers around but in the area I can't think of any other classes that offer use of a gas kiln. The price is about 300 per semester, no limit on what you can fire, and clay is included (not a bag of clay... all the clay you can use). Its hard to beat.
If you going to stay local, DelVal pottery supply is the place to go. Judy Wilson who is on this list works there and I think owns it. Its a hike from where you are, but its the only game in town that I know, and its also a great place to go.

Hello Kristina,

I can't help you with places and all, but you can call
Ceramics Supply (Supplies?) in Lodi, New Jersey
(Located close to the GW bridge on 46)
The have an 800#-can't find it right now.
They deliver, and free of charge over $250, all over
NJ, NY and NE PA.
In addition they will probably have answers to all
your other questions- they know just about any
clay-=er in the state.
If you need further help, just email me.

Hi Kristina,

I'd like to add to David & Marianne's suggestions... I've gone to Del Val
and they are excellent! However, you have to cross north/northeast
Philadelphia. There's no direct and easy way to get there.

If you're going to come near Philadelphia, there's always The Ceramic Shop
(www.theceramicshop.com). I have no financial interest in it at all. I
used to rent space there and now I have my own place. Mark Leuders is the
owner. His prices are reasonable and it's about 5 minutes from the
Allgheny Exit of I-95.

The supply place Marianne mentioned may be closer to you. I don't know. I
just wanted to mention TCS.

Hi Kristina,
The Monmouth County Park system operates a wonderful
clay studio that was written up in Ceramics Monthly a
few years ago. Although they don't have a gas kiln,
they do have raku & do cone 6 oxidation. The glazes
are quite nice & there is a choice of 3 or 4 clay
bodies. Classes are inexpensive. The studio is
located in Lincroft at Thompson Park. Go to the
Monmouth County Park website for more info.

The Island Beach Foundation for the Arts & Sciences
also has an extensive ceramics program with gas kilns,
raku, etc. During the summer they have nationally
known potters teach week long workshops. They are
open year round and have a deal where you can have 24
hour access to the studio. They also have a website.

Most of the people I know in this area order clay from
Ceramic Supply of New York & New Jersey. It's located
in Lodi and they will deliver free if the order is
over $100. They're very reliable & helpful on the
phone. They also have master classes & workshops
featuring nationally known artists. Check out their
website for more info.

Best wishes,
Barbara Rivolta

Just responding to the NJ question....I live in Mantoloking (Jersey Shore)
and for the past 7 years I have ordered my supplies from Lodi - Ceramic
