hay creek report

just a quick report.
bob anderson/jenny coffin are on the fourth firing of the
small flat top with identical iron saga results.
gold lustre/red temmoku with black partridge feather.
we are going to fire each day. (eight in a row) we are using cone 12
over totally.
kiln has responded perfectly.

donovan and the gang have the wood kiln almost done.
we are going to add the castable today.

this is a totally flat/inline ground hog/ sort of a flatagama.
it is a new design for donovan. he has used a sand mold
to form the arch of the kiln body. then the entire kiln will get a
thick castable over the entire structure. we are hoping to have
a one day capable kiln. the chamber is at least 60 cubic feet.

it is truly a new kiln concept. and it is a thing
of beauty. we are going to use every brick at hay creek.
we may have to raid the old pile soon. but, the stack
is almost done. fire box is complete, and we have maybe 40more
bricks to place over the chamber. it has the shape of a ships hull.
nordic...turn it over and we could all sail to norway...
but, that darn donovan is swedish.

we are all going to butch's saw mill today. 83 years old and
still making great sawyer wood. we will pick up a few trailers
of slab wood to go along with kurt's cherry and walnut strips.

it is without question the best hay creek ever. the general
excitment and cooperation of folks is beyond measure.
adults/caring/giving and working together.
women and men with equal status. no bosses, just human leadership.
all egos parked on the road. 32 artists that care about
the craft. people with skill and talent.
adult shared learning at its best.
it does work....we just have to define the purpose of
being potters/artists. making things with skill and knowledge.
sharing information and daily tasks. cooperation. yet, each
person has their own head to create and make things. new ideas
are admired/old skill and knowlege of clay is sacred.

as one of our friends yelled the other day. `this is a great
day to wake up being a potter`.
