call to clayart potters nceca 2007

updated wed 22 jun 05

A proposal is being written to the NCECA Gallery Exhibit Board
for our very own CLAYART show at the 2007 New Orleans NCECA!

Before we are accepted and given venue as a gallery show
we must submit a body of work in slide format to be approved.
Considering we have such a broad spectrum of Clayarters
the body of work will first be judged by three anonymous
judges from our CLAYART community.
To enter:
Send three good quality 35mm slides of your work
and your resume and artist statement to:

Billie Mitchell
NCECA CLAYART Show
Box 2783
Acworth, GA 30102

DEADLINE FOR SLIDES to be postmarked by midnight AUGUST 7, 2005
Enclose a SASE with full postage due for the return of your slides.
We are not responsible for slides being lost in the mail so registered mail
is advised.

The slides will be scanned and judged first by our own CLAYART judges then
the accepted body of work will be delivered in slide format
with the show proposal to NCECA before September 28, 2005.

There is NO guarantee that this show will be accepted, however if it is, the
artists accepted in the show will be able to show 3-4 pieces of their work
similar to the body of work in the slides that were submitted.
The artists will be responsible for shipping to and from the show in New
Orleans or they may deliver the work before NCECA 2007. Details of the
location and venue will be forthcoming.
There is discussion of printing and posters that will be announced later.

The deadline for entry is August 2005 for the NCECA in 2007.
These dates are set by the NCECA requirements.
Please submit your slides as soon as possible.

Hi, Billie

May I make a request?

Could you expand the number of slides that can be submitted for consideration?
Like many of us, I work in several areas of clay. I have sculptural
work, functional and non-functional work. Some of us do wood fire and
electric fire. Some do both hi/mid-fire and low fire.

In most jury situations, there is a better chance of getting into a
show if you submit work that is 'relative'--things that have the same
look about them. If you send in one example of each thing you do and
they are all put up together for viewing, the impression is that
(even thought you may be and that's okay, really) you are all over
the place and have no particular style, (therefore not easily
identified, therefore not easily quantified, buttonholed, sold as an
artist with a body of work, etc.). But, that's all another
discussion.......

Since this is an artist's group and we do understand that many of us
have more than just one facet, would it be possible to submit say, 3
slides of woodfire; 3 slides of functional; 3 slides of sculptural
work?

If everything were properly identified by the submitter and if the
viewing of slides is using the blind system, each type of work could
be reviewed.

I don't think this would create an avalanche of slides, but as a
group of artists viewing other's work, expand the possibilities and
give ourselves a bit of a break.

Permitting more than three slides per person might
be possible (though difficult for jurors, who will have
an amazing number to look at anyway). But it is not
a good idea for the person seeking entry to the show,
beginners almost invariably choose "one of each" when they
enter juried shows. You should be aware that no matter
what kinds of clay work you do, or how many varieties,
your work has your fingerprints all over it, just as drawings
and paintings do. You should choose your best work,
select your three pieces, and go for it. Doing so helps
the maker to learn to discern what their best work IS.
Chances of acceptance are not likely to increase merely
with an increase in the number of slides.

regards
