list etiquette and management, was looking for a good fight?

You're right of course, Earl! I'm hard put to say why it works on my lists
and not necessarily here. Historians are at LEAST as varied and firm in
their opinions as potters.

Sometimes, on my lists when someone posts something that looks as though
it's a hot button issue (and there are at least as many there as here),
I'll either pour oil on the waters before it gets to that point with a
gentle public reminder, or write them offlist and ask if they're all right,
because they normally don't act that way...call me an old hippie, but the
positive approach seems to work.

And I DO understand that with that kind of volume, which I easily receive
here in my private email too, even WITH an aggressive spam filter and a very
good virus program, that some things may slip through the cracks. Looking
forward to the day when new software is able to relieve you and Mel and
Joyce of that burden!

That's where I generally remind the list that it's all right to delete
threads or even people whose style grates...we're all different.

Not minding shouldn't be the point...I really like to put the onus for good
behaviour on the list members themselves. The nanny deal that Lili was
talking about shouldn't have to be an issue.

Agreed...that happens everywhere. Is it possible to let the person know
that, offlist, rather than just have them feel frustrated and censored when
their post never shows up?

And of course I hope you allow this through as of interest to the list,
because I know a fair number of people who've felt that way. I think it
would be a vast help to the emotional tenor of the group to let people know,
offlist, what's up.

Your suggestions have merit. It would probably be a little nicer. My personal problem is that I really don't have the time. The way Clayart is set up, I would have to find and "copy" their address, which is not always easy to find in the messages the way they come to us for approval. Then hit reply, cut the clayart address out and paste the senders address in. I haven't figured out anything easier.

I can't speak for Mel or Joyce on their criteria, but that's me. Another thing that can cloud the issue is that I am certain that either some people send their exact messages more than once sometimes, or somehow the internet/clayart software is duplicating some messages, because I will see the exact same message more than once. Now that MIGHT be my foggy mind playing tricks on me, after all I'm no spring chicken.
