Dear Robert;

I have had good luck getting iridescence with unwashed wood ash. The
solubles seem to promote this quality. Probably what the ancient
potters did as well.

Does anyone know how to try to create an iridescent cone 10 glaze. I have
seen pictures of Chinese jian hare's fur glazes that are blue and want to
try to create something like that. It may also be called a yohen temmoku.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Robert,

I have had good results with a shino glaze ( Penn State Shino) over a =
redart terra sig....think oil slick and you will get the idea.

In the old days we would actually fume the salt kiln with stannous =
chloride during the cool down around red heat. Rainbow carnival glass =
comes to mind.

Best,

I consider iridescence to be a surface effect such as you might get from an
application of stannous chloride to a raku piece. I have no idea how you
might achieve such an effect from a high fire process. But it sounds as
though you are asking more about something that I would term opalescence, an
effect that is created by a very specific distribution of bubbles throughout
a mostly transparent glaze. If that's what you are looking for, you might
try to find a copy of _Celadon Blues_ by Robert Tichane.

In doing some testing based on Tichane's book, I got some very tantalizing
results with opalescence - almost an electric blue. You can read my original
post here: http://www.potters.org/subject72313.htm

Hope this helps.
