duncan kiln repair questions.

I have a duncan 820 automatic kiln and I had written
before about only the bottom elements being on when
doing the bisque setting, but when turned to hifire,
the top ones did light up, so it wasn't the elements,
I just haven't figured out exactly how the automatic
cycles were suppose to go. Arnold sent me a schematic
which helped me use the ohmmeter to determine the
elements were OK. If yours isn't an 820 teachers than
Maybe it is similar.

I have an older duncan kiln that I am trying to put back into service.
I fired it to just under cone 08 over the weekend. It became obvious that
the top three elements are not working so I came to this question.

If one element goes out (opens) will it shut off the other two in that bank?

I thought they would be wired in parallel and if they are then I have some
bad switching and controls to repair.

FWIW I can hear switching and clicking when I turn the control on and it
clicks when I turn it off. I'm just not getting power to the top three elements.

Thanks all,

Ben

Ben, what is the model number of your Duncan kiln?

I'll look tonight to see what the model number is.
I checked the elements where they enter the kiln and they read nearly zero
ohms so they aren't open circuits (broken) but I still think that it has to
be a control issue as they all three were not on.

I had the thing firing for about 12 hours and got up to almost cone 08. The
controls were on high fire for some 6 to 8 hours and the top elements never
lit up.

Thanks, Ben

My kiln is an EA 1029-N PRO PLUS

The top bank of elements in the Duncan EA 1029-N are wired in series. If one
element is burned out, none of the elements in that bank will fire. The
easiest way to check the elements is with an ohmmeter. (The kiln should be
unplugged first.)

Thanks,

That helps tremendously!!!
Since I don't have a schematic, I was kinda flying blind (with the kiln
unplugged of course)
The kiln is a beater but I replaced that crappy fiber bottom and a couple
elements last year and hoped to be firing some things and making pots this
summer.

As always

Thanks

Ben

Ben, you can also download a Duncan instruction manual at this link:

http://www.paragonweb.com/catalog.cfm?type=manuals

If you need a wiring diagram, call Paragon's customer service department at
800-876-4328. They will send you a copy.
