Hi All,

I have been searching all over my studio for a cone 6 glaze recipe I got off
this list several years ago. It is a white base with 6 different colors made
from it. The base was called K15-A. Can anyone find the recipe and forward
it on to me?

Thanks a million,

Sue Vincent

Sue Vincent and Emily Lees were looking for a glaze posted in the past
called K-15a. The closest I can find is k15-1, in a post from Sharon
LaRocca-Miranda (whatever happened to her, I used to enjoy her posts) in
April 1996, about tests from one of Zakin's books. I am posting the entire
email, people who have chronic glaze testing syndrome (CGTS) may enjoy the
other recipes also.

New batch of glaze tests, some from Zakin, Electric Kiln vol. 1 and 2 (i"ll
give you those recipes), and some from good ole clayart:
All are oxidation, cone 6 (cone 7 in the sitter), claybody=white stoneware
Zakin; k15 -1 (what aglorious name)
Neph sy 40
dolomite 18
flint 18
kaolin 12
bone ash 6
lithium carb 2
zinc ox 4
copper carb 2

THIS IS A DARK BLUE GLAZE, NICE TEXTURE, WORKS WELL THIN.
SEMI-MATT. IF THICK THEN IT'S GLOSS AND REALLY BLUE (should sell like
crazy...)

Zakin: New Tyler Amber
Soda frit (frit 3110) 20
red clay 60
gerstely borate 20

AMBER WITH TINY BLACK FLECKS. SHINY. TRANSLUCENT.

Zakin: TMH 4 (where does he get these names?)
Soda spar 46
wollastonite 10
ball clay 18
gerstely bor 8
zircopax 18
cobalt ox 2

HORRIBLE GUMMY BLUE. OPAQUE. LOOKS LIKE BLUEBERRY CHEWING GUM.

These next are clayart glazes, look in the archives!

Mayan blue: this is a nice gloss teale blue glaze. Better, with more
texture when thick.

New Rust: looks like heavy grit sandpaper. Amber, unbelievably matt (I
don't think I underfired it).

Floating blue:
neph sy 47.3
gertsly bor 27
silica 20.3
neph sy.....47.3
gersley borate.27
silica.....20.3

kaolin....5.4
red iron ox..2%
Cobalt carb.....1%
rutile..........4%
bebentonite..2%

Thanks to Anne for this one. It's a really nice slate blue with green
specks, gloss, translucent. Worked very well over the white body.

Nancy's pink icing

well, NOT pink. pale turquoise, clear, transparent glaze. Not the greatest
glaze in terms of reliability, sometimes it looked lumpy(maybe when thick).
Sounded so good, sure wish it had worked for me!

Finally, here is a TZ glaze from Zakin's book, maybe someone would like to
test it, I am currently testing a Tizzie glaze w/out lead that someone
posted recently.

TZ Dry base glaze ("fine dry white")
Ball clay 26
wollastonite 28
neph sy 35
tin ox 8
zinc 3

I would try a search for
K15 glaze
on google
It turned up a glaze called K15-1

A search in the archives at:
http://lsv.ceramics.org/archivedata/clayart.html
for k15 turned up about five posts, two with recipes. Also for k15-1

Not a good idea to use this as a liner glaze - it's way short of silica and
will leach copper into many foods.

This may be a stable glaze - Have it tested if you are adding colours to
find out.

This is a typical underfired matte type glaze - unstable - not suitable as
a liner glaze for functional ware.

This is probably a stable glaze I would not hesitate to use it as a liner.

Hard to tell if it's stable - the silica is borderline and the alumina is
pretty high - it may be matte because it is underfired - if that is so it
will not be stable. I'll guess it will not be because of the low amount of
Zinc.

Odd. I mixed up this glaze several years ago and got a beautiful, shiny
rich brown with YELLOW flecks.

Then I mixed up a new batch and got instead a very nice-looking glaze
the color of real amber.

That glaze sat for a while in a tightly covered plastic jug and the
next time it was re-mixed fired, the result was YUCKY--pale, ugly
brown, less shine.

Recently I made a new batch and got the rich brown again but no flecks
of any color.

The constants are kiln, witness cones, firing schedule and the red
clay--Cedar Heights Redart. The variable are the frit and the GB--both
new batches.

What's going on?

Hi Eleanor,

I suspect the new GB as being the reason.

You also can expect that frit to help deflock the glaze over time - so it
might also be a stirring problem.
