Thanks for the reply, I was trying to see how close
CMC and V-Gum were chemically. If you don't mind
checking your binder I'd appreciate it.

Delores,
I don't believe that SCMC and V-Gum are close at all.
SCMC is a cellulose product (Sodium
Carboxymethylcellulose, or NaCMC). V-Gum, as I said,
is a magnesium silicate... I've seen bentonite listed
as "magnesium clay" before.
SCMC is used in the meat packing industry and is
included in many hygiene products. I've recently used
some 'severe dryness' eyedrops containing CMC, because
it acts as a lubricant after absorbing enough water.
When I woke up the next morning, there was a crust
that had formed on my eyelashes. Didn't care for
that, really...
In glazes it increases the drying time, but the
positive is that it dries as a hardener (as it did on
my eyelashes) to turn the glaze into a durable shell
on the clay form. Too much CMC creates problems,
which is why I like the mixture of CMC/V-Gum in my
crystalline glazes. It better allows me to get the
glaze on really thick while avoiding most of the
larger cracking and pulling away from the form that
occurs with glazes of low clay content.
I'm going into my studio tomorrow, and I'll check on
the V-Gum formula.
