Hi, Kathy.

my studio mate, Jennifer Buckley, and I did a lot of work 2 year ago on
cone 6 glazes.

we tested about 90 glaze recipes in both reduction and oxidation, using
small thrown cups. none of the glazes included stains.

overall, the reduction results were more interesting to us... more
depth, variation, subtley, whatever.

out of the 90, there were probably about 20 - 25 reduction test cups
that we really liked.

i have the recipes on an excel spread sheet.... but i never got around
to typing in our comments. sigh. but i do have them in handwritten form.

so.

do you by any chance live near upstate ny? if so, we'd be glad to haul
out the boxes of cups & let you have a look-see.

i could try emailing the excel spreadsheet to you as an attachment.
t;hough it might be too large. i just don't know.

at any rate, let me know if you're interested.

I am also considering trying to do more work with my gas kiln at cone 6.
I have done some testing of clays and glazes and the results look pretty
promising.

I still really like c 10 glazes but would like to develop some glazes that
work well
at cone 6 for functional ware and then make the cone 10 stuff just for me
and galleries.

The most promising to date is Ron Roy's cone 6 majolica with some additions
of mason stain
to the same glaze layered over it and fired to cone 6 (flat) in a natural
gas fired downdraft kiln.
Clay used is Plainsman P300. I have also tried it with Plainsman M 390 but
there is a lot of iron in that
body and it tends to flux a bit too much.

if anyone is interested in corresponding regarding this please contact me
off list and i will try to keep
the list posted on what evolves.

Kathy

I fired ^6 reduction for 20 years at MSU billings. Some of the glazes
are in the archives. Also they are in the new book of Oriental glazes
by Michael Bailey. There is a copper red, a celedon and an iron
saturate red.

Hey Kathy!

Marcia Selsor, June MacDonald and Norman van der Sluys were so helpful to me
when I asked for help on the subject in 2000, 2001. I have the
correspondence, and will snail mail it along.
The guild I belong to has a large gas kiln and I have done quite a few
trials, but not as many as I`d like. Coincidentaly some of us are starting
to organize a group firing for the summer, so the timing fits together
nicely.
It`s a bonus that we both have easy access to Plainsman and can compare the
same clays. I send this to the list in case others would like to check the
archives for `Marcia`s msub ^6 reduction glazes` dated mon 15 may 00...Where
does the time go?

Till later, Lela
