trimming question

Hey Bev...

How strange.. that jurying criteria sounds idiotic.

The design of the pot should govern whether it should have a trimmed foot or
not.
I have a friend who made these wonderful pots for an anagama firing, for
example, where just a bevel was made off the wheel head and then she made a
shell design on the bottom when she ran the wire under it. her pot was
evenly thrown and that kind of foot looked just right for that pot.

The type of foot should be determined by the shape of the pot and the pot's
function. A pitcher, for example, shouldnt have a foot so small that it
will make it topple over at the slightest nudge.. same for a coffee mug or a
wine goblet. One customer commented that he liked flat bottomed mugs - no
recess in the bottom where water could collect if it was put in the
dishwasher. The vases I make I like to have a recessed foot so they
visually "float".

Robin Hopper's book "Form and Function" explains design, aesthetics, and
feet on pots quite well. That might help guide you along as well.

Take care :)
