I'm going to Castelo Branco in Portugal in a few weeks. Does any one =
know of any pottery places to visit?

Hi.
When we were there (3years ago) there were many small
pottery selling/ making places around the general
area. They're not that easy to find any more, but the
out-lying villages are your best bet. You are going
at a good time: tourist season has not quite begun and
people are working rather than selling.
Try to get to the Evora area. There is some famous
chip-inlay pottery in that region, not much of it
around any more. Not cheap but unique. Unglazed terra
cotta. There is also "fake" stuff that looks like the
real thing (painted on - good fake job). Very
intricate, beautiful form. I believe the chips (white)
are marble chips and the work is usually done by old
women.
Bring an umbrella and extra sweater (can be cold in
the mountains) and have a marvelous time. Get to the
Roman mosaics if you can! Marianne Kuiper Milks
