purchasing a wheel help

Hi All,

I've been browsing the list serv for the past few weeks and trying to do my
research on my first wheel purchase. I'm setting up my first studio and was
hoping to find some good resources but it looks like the clayart list serv
is the only resource on pottery wheels (are there any other good online
resources?).

So... I'm buying my first wheel and I don't know what to get. I plan on
purchasing a new wheel btw.

In my research it seems that:

Brent - is expensive and may not be as high quality as it used to be (it got
purchased by another company??? and they stopped using all metal parts, or
something to that extent), but it still comes with a 5 year warenty.

Shimpo VL Whisper - Fairly priced, I've used it and liked it a lot, it's
really nice that it can be used as a banding wheel, but but but how will it
hold up? It seems that A) the new technology may not have been really been
put to the test and B) from what I've heard the average joe will not be able
to do the repairs themselves, and making adjustments to the foot pedal is
also supposed to be a pain.

Pacifica - I've also used this wheel before and found it fine. The wheel
head is smaller than the others. I'm not sure how easy it will be to make
adjustmest to the foot pedal. And know nothing of how it's supposed to
hold up vs a Brent.

Those are really the only wheels I've been considering.

Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Thanks,
ZDS

I posted a week or two ago asking members about their experiences with the
new Shimpo, Pacificas and Brents. Thank you to all who responded to my post
and to this one. I took the plunge and my Shimpo VL Whisper arrived today.
I'm flattened with a chest cold and fever, so I can't unpack it (sigh).
I'll let folks know what I think and how well the wheel holds up over time.

Oh wow.. I just found that thread. Really helpful. Thanks everyone for
your comments. I think I may go shimpo.

Victoria, where did you order from? I've seen prices online from around
$750-$850.

Hi Zach,

I ordered from Sheffield Pottery in Mass. (888 774 2529). They have
the Shimpo VL Whisper on sale for $769. Shipping was $69 to Vermont. .
The wheel arrived in 2 days. I haven't unpacked it because I've been
flattened with a chest illness. If you're closer to Fl., consider
Bennett's (800 432 0074) which sells them for $750. They ship by truck
(safer than Sheffield's UPS). Shipping to Vermont would have been
$129. I'm excited that the Shimpo is adjustable in height. I'm 5"2'
and can set the height to be lower than most other brands. I think
that the legs may come off completely.

We'll have to exchange experiences.
Good luck Zach and make beautiful pots on your new wheel.
