question for arnold at paragon... (type-k & -s thermocouples)

Lori, it is normal for the stainless steel sheath on the Type-K thermocouple
to blacken and flake. The sheath is a high-nickel stainless steel and turns
black above 2000 deg. F. I would not be too concerned, and I would not
chance a thermocouple until it failed.

If it were my kiln, I would use the Type-S thermocouple, which *far*
outlasts the Type-K. If you decide to switch to the Type-S, you will also
need to replace the lead wires. Then go into Sentry controller Options and
select Type-S. Here is how:

1. From IdLE, press Options repeatedly until TC appears. Press Enter.
2. Use the 1 or 2 key to select TC S. Press Enter.
3. Press Stop to return to IdLE.

Once you have replaced the thermocouple and lead wires and selected TC S,
the kiln is ready to fire. It should take about 20 minutes to change the
thermocouple and a minute or so to reset the controller.

I'm not trying to sell you another product. I'm just telling you what I
would do.

Sincerely,

Arnold Howard
