Are there any thoughts out there on making signs for your studio?

Marine Plywood, good paint and make easy to read! Some people try to
get too fancy and what you want to say gets lost. The sign of a good
sign is that you can read it easily. Mike Gordon

Hi Randy,

I have a hint on only one aspect of a sign: that is, if you are going to
make ceramic letters, a good way to get patterns for them is to find a font
you like, print the letters as large as possible, then, if that's not big
enough, take them to a copy shop and enlarge them to the appropriate size.
Remember to allow for clay shrinkage. A picture of my one experience with
this is at: http://www.lompocvalleyartassociation.com/ on the opening page.
Someone else did the redwood carving, and I did the words "Cypress Gallery".
The other smaller letters are gilded.

I don't know how large or wordy you sign has to be, but perhaps part of it,
like the address numbers could be glazed numbers on thrown discs. I'm sure
this has been done umpteen times-it's a natural for potters-but I still like
it.

The signs I saw a couple years ago in Maine were so effective and tasteful
but I do not know their source.Maybe someone from Maine can elaborate.

Hi Randy,

My own notion of Signs, something like how I imagine
Architecture to accomidate also, is to respect the
from-where it is
mostly to be seen, and how well it may work at that
distance.

Painted signs have many advantages, and may be done well by
anyone with a little patience and ingenuity.

Large clear letters, simple phrases, and as brief as
possible, are good guidelines...

Then test it yourself, from various probable locations from
which others are to see it...

Any decent exterior grade of Plywood, Sheet Metal or 'Medex'
should work fine. Try and use good Oil-base Primers and
Paints...and if useing plywood, try and cover the top and
side edges with something to keep rain from them...smear the
edges with some sort of tar or caulking and cover in some
narrow "U" Channel extrusions or something...that'll keep
'em tidy.

If it goes to hell in five or eight years, who cares? Make
another one...!

I made mine from Hand-cut tile and glass gems I use in large mosaics.

Maybe you could do yours in wood fired slabs/tiles, that resemble your work?
Very nice work, by the way!
