Apart from the problem of leaking washers, the worst thing to happen to them was when they crashed out of bed in the middle of the night. Mine ALWAYS broke, it never just made a loud noise, and unlike Janet I was only allowed one, not two.
There is one of these monsters in the museum at Ellis Island, New York, I suppose as a reminder of the quaint things immigrants brought over. It is labelled "water bottle" which is a bit misleading as they were only ever used for hot water and in a bed. Definitely not a drinking vessel.
