ants in the kitty food bowls-a solution!

I found a great use for some old chip and dip bowls I had made, you
know the ones with a platter and bowl in the middle. We have had an
influx of ants which get into our cats food bowls so I filled the chip
part with water and put the food into the dip part. Kind of like a moat
and the cats drink out of it too. Works great!

What happens eventually if you don't constantly change the water is that food
will drop into the water and the ants will use it as a raft. But not as many get across.
I had ants coming into my kitchen, going for the cat food on the counter. I put lime
across the door threshhold and when I came back at the end of the day, the ants had built a
bridge out of cat hair across the lime! I don't think we're the only intelligence on this planet
and we're quite arrogant to think so!

Scott, the old-time potteries in Texas, and I assume elsewhere, made
ant traps as part of their regular product line.
They were small versions of a chip & dippie, about 3 inches in diameter.
The idea was to set your table legs into the small inner bowl, and the
outer water-filled or kerosene-filled "moat" kept ants from climbing
up the table legs onto the table.

Here's what I do if ants invade the dog or cat bowls: To save the
food, but get rid of the ants, I put the infested bowl into the freezer
for an hour - the dead ants will fall to the bottom of the bowl, but the
still-good food can be poured into another bowl.

Ok, that's about enough...all Y'all are being mean, malicious and
greedy...and that goes for your cats too!
Just sprinkle a couple bits of food in the path the ants use,
up-path from the cat food.
They'll leave the dishes alone.
Ants have stomachs, too!

Oh Yeah Wayne.... what about tent catapillars.
Two summers ago they ate almost everything in sight including
my blueberry bushes.
When they started crawling into my studio (garage) I declared war!
I laid a strip of double sided rug tape across the cement floor. Only a few
got through...... I had a caterpillar free studio and some revenge!!!

I'm jumping in late here, but a drop of dish soap in the water will break
the surface tension and the ants will sink.
