clay temps and cones

I am relatively new to using my kiln,(used it twice) and need some help
understanding what clay firing temps mean. Which is hotter, 05 or 06? If I
have clay that is 05-04, can I use an underglaze for 06? Also, what will
happen if I fire an 06 clay with an 04 clay to bisque? I assume one will
be underfired, but I'm confused with which one. Can any one set me
straight? I am afraid of blowing up my artroom! I do understand the cone
number must match the firing temp of the clay, and about the use of
witness cones, but my kiln has a kilnsitter, so I never used witness cones.

------------

Cone numbers without the zero in front (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.): The higher the
number, the hotter the temperature.

Cone numbers with the zero (01, 02, 03, 04): The higher the number, the
cooler the temperature.

It might help if you mentally replace the zero in front of a cone number
with a minus sign. (i.e. 01 = -1, 04 = -4.)

Cone Temp chart is available from Ortonceramic.com
at:
http://www.ortonceramic.com/Resources/Chart-F.pdf

Think of the zero as a minus sign 020 (-20) is the coldest 01 hotter, 2
a little hotter, 10 hotter still.
Cone 010 is said, " Cone Oh Ten".
Cone 10 is said, " Cone ten"

I am afraid of blowing up my artroom! I do understand the cone number
must match the firing temp of the clay, and about the use of witness
cones, but my kiln has a kilnsitter, so I never used witness cones.<

Cones start with a high number preceded by a "0" and go backwards
towards the number 1.
So: 012 is cooler than 010 and thus 05 is hotter than 06.

Yes you can use the 06 underglaze and probably fire it to 04.

You can fire 06 & 04 clay together in the bisque firing, probably both to 04.

The only thing that will cause the clay to blow up is if it still too
wet when fired or firing too fast at the early part of the firing.

You need to think of the Kilnsitter as your back-up and always fire
with witness cones.
