How old is her spodumene? That is a characteristic of vintage Spodumene,
circa 60-70's.

Hi there,
A friend just mixed up a test batch of glaze using Neph Sy, Whiting,
EPK, Flint, Spodumene(10%) and Lithium(2%) and she can't get the
bubbles that appeared to settle down. I suggested adding a bit of
vinegar. Anyone have any other suggestions? Do you think it's the Spod
and Lithium making the bubbles?

Several months ago, I think it was Marcia Selsor who said the bubbles can be tamed with a quick squirt of diluted alcohol. I have used this on some of my glazes without any ill effect.

I have an old batch of spodumene that has always foamed when water is added.
I've found two solutions, neither of which change the fired result. One is
to calcine the spodumene. I never compensated for loss on ignition when I
did that, and it didn't seem to make any difference. The other method is
to make the glaze up way ahead of time with lots of extra water. Let it
settle and siphon the water off. Do this a couple of times and the foaming
will stop.

Hi Susan,
No problem. It's fun to harness with the power of so many potters. I've=20=

decided to ditch most of my antique glaze ingredients. I went in on a=20
Goddard College bulk order from Standard when I was first setting up my=20=

studio in '75. But it pays to order new, since the clay suppliers have=20=

what you will be ordering if the test is good, so why test with=20
obsolete stuff? Took me awhile to come to this...

There are a few exceptions: I have about 30 lbs of RIO left: my=20
lifetime supply!

I'll pass this on the the group.
Take Care
