Hello fellow fire fiend friends,

IS183, the Interlaken School of Art in the Berkshires, has scheduled me for a weeklong Intensive, June 20-25.
.
We will make closed and open forms, burnish with terra sigillata to fire in addition to bisked work you might bring. We will fire in a pit, a gas salt/saggar kiln and slip resist raku. Anything low fire and unglazed! A spirit of adventure and inspiration will set the tone.

I wanted to give you a heads up, as space is limited. The brochure is not yet produced, though I hope to have it in time for Nceca. I can meet with people there to discuss it if you are interested.

From the brochure:

"There will be firings both in and out of a kiln in an attempt to find an appropriate surface treatment for students’ work. Firings will include experiments with low-fire, unglazed surface techniques including slip resist, pit, and sawdust fire as well as saggar firings in the gas kiln. While we will be able to make and bisque some work, students are encouraged to bring bisqued pieces to fire, slides for critique, and ideas for exploration. The workshop is best directed to students with some ceramic skills"
"Judy Motzkin began working in clay in 1972. She found a unique voice by exploring direct work with fire as a way of “painting” the surface after some years of work with reduction porcelain, stoneware, salt-fire and raku. Over the years she has developed a palette of accidents that have been gleaned from her experiments and with which she sets the circumstances for the fire to paint the surfaces of her elegant, polished, clay vessels and sculptures. Her work has evolved to include mixed media assemblages and digital prints using her clay work as source.

So consider playing with the fire with me.
