I realized, that the only chance I am ever going get to finish
my book, is to resurrect my laptop with the dead hard drive (died during
my trip to visit "big dog" Shiho Kanzaki in Shigaraki.) Going to put
a new hard drive in the Sony laptop Vaio 505TR, and all it is gonna have
on it as far as software goes is the word processor OpenOffice.org ,
GlazeChem and Acrobat (to read E-books on) and NO CONNECTION TO THE WEB!
(Hey, this all might work on Linx!) Won't be connected to the web
until I install the wireless network....

Was easier to write on the laptop while eating breakfast,
waiting for the better half at the grocery store, watching the news or
before going to sleep sitting in bed....

Mel recently wrote regarding free tools. And invited reviews. I
won't review, just give a two thumbs with a hearty recommendation.
The contrite testimonial is that we haven't had a virus problem at
work since mandating no Outlook, and no IE. (Previously it was about 2
a month.)

As for Lees thought on using Linux. Go right ahead, another two
thumbs up. I haven't personally used Windows for about 10 years. I
have to at work a little, but only to build software. Unfortunately I
don't think GlazeChem will work. According to this
http://www.dinoclay.com/software/glzchem.html it is windows only.
There is a linux project called WINE which stands for (Wine Is Not an
Emulator) which is essentially a linux implementation of the Windows
run time libraries and a system to translate exe files to linux binaries
at runtime. It is quite succesfull and there is a good chance that it
will be able to run GlazeChem, but I have little personal experience
with either WINE or GlazeChem.

If anyone is serious about trying linux the best possible starting
point is likely the distribution from www.linspire.com, it is designed
for people whose experience is in MS Windows and who know little about
unix.

Best regards,
Mark.
