fair biz: some points to consider

Today I got a letter from a fair producer who is exhorting the
craftspeople to undersell their galleries. Here is what I am writing
him on this subject:

I have alot of trouble with your encouraging people to lower their
prices in relation to the galleries. In my case much of what I do is
not in any gallery and that doesn't apply. But for the work that is
in galleries, I will never reduce my prices for the following reasons:

1) The galleries as a group are giving me important, reliable income
upon which I will rely more and more as I grow older. By never
underselling them I take the high ground and feel this is the only
appropriate way to handle that relationship.

2) By buying from me the customer gets a far, far greater selection
of what I have to offer.

3) By selling at a fair I am taking the time and care (and
after-sales care) that the gallery gets paid for and I have to get
paid for that when I do it.

4) The rental of that piece of ground is quite expensive as you well
know. We take great risks by setting up. My costs, combined with
the time spent, easily make up the other 50%.

5) Meeting the artist is, as you mention, one of the very important
reasons why people frequent craft fairs. It has seemed to me for a
long time that this connection is very meaningful to the craft-buying
public. I think not getting bargain prices from the artist is pretty
basic to the respect for this relationship.

I know there is alot of discussion on clayart about marketing at
fairs and these are afew of my thoughts.

I think you are correct in everything you said. I also think it will fall on deaf ears.
They know what you are saying already, they are just trying to "get over".

How does somebody state this request in the first lace? What exactly did they say?

Maybe that promoter would do better to give his booth artists and
craftpersons coupons for his and your customers to save on parking, entrance to the fair
or refreshments discounts and maybe a big door prize he/she buys from his
booth participants, instead of asking you, his paying customers and main
attraction fo even having the event, to absorb the cost of his promotion in the way
of underselling your galleries.
