understanding glazes

Some of you may have received the 2005 ACS Catalogue of Ceramic =
Technical Resources during the holiday break. Although the books in this =
new compilation are mostly for the industrial and research communities =
there is one for us on p23.... "Understanding Glazes" by Richard Eppler =
and Mimi Obstler.
Have the executive of the Potter's Council had a chance to review this =
one yet?
What sort of issues do the authors address.
I would like to know if they give us answers to the reasons why some of =
our colouring materials are fugitive under the influence of food and =
beverage acids. Are we told why Copper oxides are unstable in silicate =
melts ? Do they differentiate the behaviour of Group 1 Flux Oxides from =
that of Group 2 Flux Oxides ? Are scientific tools provided for studio =
potters to attack these problems for them selves?.
From the review it is difficult to assess but if these and other =
questions are addressed it could b e a worthwhile purchase for those who =
wish to delve into the chemical aspects of glaze formulation.
A Happy New Year to All.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis.

In my foggy memory lurks a Clayart series of posts about learning the bas=
=3D
ics
of glaze making. As I recall someone on list had posted the 'lessons' to =
=3D
the
list. I have searched the archives without any luck.

I have been asked to present a mini glaze workshop and was thinking that =
=3D
the
aforementioned posting(s) were presented as a good starting point.

Does anyone recall these posts or the email of the poster?

Thanks!
