what's your cone of choice?

My recent search for cheap Seger Cones got me to thinking: Does anyone
outside Japan still use them (perhaps Germany?). That got me to wondering
what the preferred cone/bar/chip of choice is of potters worldwide. So I
guess this is a survey of Clayarters to see what is being used, and in what
country.

Curiously yours,

Hi Mike!

I use Orton cones & bars, mostly bars. I'm in Port St. Lucie Florida, U.S.A.

Dear Mike;

I feel certain that Orton is the cone of choice(not that there is a
choice) in the USA. Any exceptions here?

Are you having any luck with your WireTool??

I've only found Orton here in the United States. Atleast in the State
of Washington.

I only ever see Orton cones for sale at the various local and regional
ceramic suppliers I have visited.

So I would have to say Orton large cones.
Self-supporting for putting here and there in the Skutt (KM-1027),
regulars in cone packs for firing the Geil.

Whatever I am firing I use either all self-supporting or all regular
cones in the same firing. I don't mix them.
I don't know if it makes a difference, but I like to keep everything
consistent in a firing.

You can only survey the English speaking world, Mike and as
Clayart is 95% US/Canadian it is not even proportional
representation, so to speak. If you want a seriously accurate
answer, I would directly ask the manufacturer's for a definitive
reply, if I were you. I know a potter here in North Wales, who
says he has never been able to fire as well since Seger cones
became unobtainable. I forget his reason for saying that...
Something to do with heatwork I should think.

Anyway, that would indicate that they are unobtainable here in
the UK, but I cannot be sure about that. Steve at Bath Potters
will know...

Sincerely

Came late to this.

Interesting observation that; I disagree completely with him, but then
when I swapped to Orton from UK made Seger/Stafforshire cones in '79 the
latter were so unreliable that I came to rely on draw rings to gauge the
state of my 1285oC reduction firings. Damn site more accurate!

I haven't seen or heard of them for years.
