Lissa,

I'm sure others will chime in but when your kiln elements are cold they
are a little stiffer and the magnetic fields from the alternating
current electricity flowing causes them to vibrate. This creates the
hum you hear. As they warm up they soften a little bit and expand
some. This dampens out the vibrations so the hum stops.

My kiln always hums until I turn it up from low to medium. So, do as I
do and enjoy your kiln song.

Hello all,

The archives have been a wealth of knowledge to me for a few months now.
I'm a new potter... used to handbuild in high school (six yrs ago) then
forgot about how much I loved clay until more recently when I started
throwing.

Well I did the usual addicted newbie thing and turned my garage into a
studio and purchased a small kiln first to appease my addiction and plan
on upgrading in the future.

Now to my question. I've only fired my kiln twice to bisque (05) and once
to cone 6 and so far so good. But today when I started my kiln on low it
was making a humming/buzzing noise. Is this bad and/or do I need to do
anything or just ignore.

Thanks in advance,
