Silvie Granatelli “Pottery Through the Culture of Food”
Feb 21- 25, 9:30 am – 4:30 pm
$350, Lunch included

The relationship of food to pottery form will be the focus of this course.
There will be discussions regarding how various cultures made pots for the
foods and rituals they revered. Here are some of the questions we might
work on: While looking at how American culture treats food containment,
what does it mean to be a contemporary potter? How can the pots we make
embrace our food culture? What does surface embellishment convey
symbolically and formally? What makes our pots personal?

In this workshop, the wheel will be used as a tool to make various pots,
which will be reformed and altered. There will be some hand building as
well. The development of surface decoration, carving, slip trailing, and
colored stain drawings will be explored. All of these surface techniques are
employed before the bisque stage. There will be demonstrations in the
morning preceded by discussions, readings and critiques. Part of the
afternoon will be devoted to looking at images of historical and
contemporary pots from different cultures. These presentations will give an
overview of meaning behind historical pottery styles through the rich world
of foods that are our heritage.

The studio of Silvie Granatelli lies at the confluence of the Beaver Creek
and the Little River. Once an old Mill site, you can stand on the bridge
over the water and maybe catch a glimpse of the migrating Blue Herons that
often rest there. Silvie has been successful nationally with her work,
making elegant and very personal functional porcelain pottery. She received
her BFA Kansas City Art Institute and her MFA from Montana State University.
Recipient of a Virginia Museum Fellowship, she teaches part-time at Virginia
Tech as well as many workshops around the country. Her work can be seen in
numerous ceramic books and publications, including "Pots in the Kitchen" by
Josie Walter; "The Ceramic Glaze Handbook" by Mark Burleson, "Handbuilt
Tableware", by Kathy Triplett; 'Clay Times', 'Studio Potter', and 'Ceramics
Monthly.'

The Hambidge Center is located about two hours from both Atlanta, GA and
Asheville, NC. Lodging is not included, but a list of possible
accommodations will be sent upon registration. The Ramada Inn, located in
nearby Dillard, GA, offers a special rate for all Hambidge workshop
participants. For more information, or to register call (706) 746 - 5718 or
