You are so right, Tony. The Canadian public is duped by salespeople of
franchised `art galleries` by the millions of dollars. An aquaintance in a
management position came right out and admitted it to me. Our populace is
uneducated about the difference with or without the frame. Europeans know
the difference, and the States have strict laws on the subject.
Some time ago I read a thorough article in a Canadian art magazine
critisizing the lack of controls here...and R. Bateman.
Stay warm, Lela

Lela: Since you mentioned him i will elaborate. Yes, Bateman was a high
school teacher from around here that paints wildlife scenes and flogs the
reproductions by the thousands. He now lives on Saltpring Island in BC,
donated a million dollar art center in his name, supposedly spends several
months a year in his tax haven in the Bahamas getting carpal tunnel from
signing 1000's upon 1000's of reproductions ( posters. big photocopies) and
sells them for several hundred bananas each. Another popular one around here
is the work of Trish Romance, who I have renamed Trash Romance. She does
cutsey Victorian homes with flower gardens. Framing stores love these two.
$300 for the repro and another 3-4 for the frame. Center it right above the
couch and voila you are an art collector.
At Nccea you can bring home hundreds of these repros for FREE! Decorate your
studio but wall art in your livingroom I don't think so!!!!! That's where
your best pots in your collection deserve to live without the company of
imatators.
cheers,
Tony
