new l and l kiln failure

Hi all.... Got a question, why would a brand new L and L kiln fail to
shut off ? No fancy computer just automatic shut off /kiln sitter and manual
dials. Yes the automatic shut off was turned off ( set on 0 ) after the
firing was completed and all switches were on the off position.. I did not
look at the electric box to see if the wheel was spinning but I did not
realize that the kiln could still be on with all these precautions. IMagine
my surprize when I went down to studio to take out peeps and maybe pop the lid
to see a orange glow in my upper portion of the kiln.. I dont think it
was way overfired as its only orange glow but I had to physically unplug the
top ring to make it shut off... I believe the other 3 rings may have shut
off but not that top ring...

2 obvious failures of the top ring and the safety shut off... but why
only the top ring? Yes its still under warantee and L and L has a kiln guru to
call... I dont think they are open yet as its on west coast and I am on
east coast... not really an emergency either as it will take most of the day
to cool off this kiln now..

Any thoughts on this ? Looks to me like I will have to check the electric
box from now on and unplug the sections from the control box if thats what
it takes to turn off the thing. What a shame for a brand hammer new kiln
though... I am very disappointed and hope my pots are ok... not gonna be
fun glazing them over fired... Cat Jarosz in NC mountains.

Perhaps the Kiln Sitter weight fell, but the locking slide didn't operate. A
wire pressing against the slide can prevent the Kiln Sitter from shutting
off the power.

Did you hear elements humming after you turned off the switches?

Cat,

If you read the manual, which I did for some strange reason a few years
back, you will see it says that the kiln should be turned off at the
breaker. This is not just the case for L & L kilns, but other controllable
kilns also.

The relays can stick and the kiln will not shut off.

Call L&L and see what they say. Great Kilns by the way!

Hope that helps,
