college questions

Subject: University of Texas at Austin and University of North Texas -
college questions

Cathy, both have good ceramics programs, BUT they
are markedly different. You should make a personal
visit to each school; neither is really very far away.

North Texas has a really good physical plant, many
many gas kilns, plus wood, salt, raku, etc. They have
a large number of undergraduate students every term,
and about ten or twelve grad students.

The teachers there are Elmer Taylor, head of department,
and Jerry Austin. Both have taught there for a long time.
Elmer is a functional potter, and his brush work is outstanding,
he does all of his decoration with oxides. Jerry Austin does
work that is more sculptural. But you need to visit, and if
possible talk with one or both of them. UNT is in fact in Denton,
not in Dallas.

I know less of the program at Austin, but it has a good reputation
for undergrad work. There's also a good program at Texas A&M
Corpus Christi, Louis Katz teaches there. I haven't seen their
physical plant for a while, but it is more than adequate for undergraduate
work (And, it is also far, but not too far, from Dallas.)

Go look, go look, go look...
