double venting now more even firing in l&l

Carol,

I'm getting more even firings by placing a light load on the bottom,
densely packing the middle and staggering 1/2 shelves on top.
BTW I do not use 3 cone cone packs. The frugal in me figures I can tell by
how
far 1 self supporting cone goes over whether it has over or under fired.
I set program for ^5 with 15 minute soak, place a ^7 bar in the kiln sitter
and ^6 self support cone on each shelf.
The last 2 firings..... the ^7 bar bent tripping the kiln sitter which
shut down the kiln, ^6 cone was gracefully bent to indicate ^6 on top and
middle shelves was reached, the bottom cone was slightly less bent.
Note each kiln has a personality and once familiar with what colors and
flavors
it likes you have a happy kiln and great firings. My point........ what
works
for me might not work for someone else.... you gotta know your tools.

Gayle Bair - is sooooooo happy with 4 new Bison tools! I had to run down to
the studio
at 6am to trim pots I hastily made yesterday...... so nice, so sharp, so
well made...
Thanks Phil!

Hi Bill.
As Gayle said- L and L does not recommend it. Also, won't it lead to a cold
spot in that area of the kiln? I always have cone packs at each spyhole.
Usually, the bottom is slowest to hit cone 6, though I try my best to
compensate by turning up each section at a different rate (I have a manual
kiln). How would leaving the top hole open even out the firing? I sure would
love a more even firing.
