problems with porcelain

Hi. I recently set up my own studio, which included purchasing a new wheel. I have a Bailey wheel, and have been using the Standard Clay Grolleg Porcelain. I have been finding that since I started working on my own wheel with this clay, I have been having problems centering. I used porcelain before, but not this particular body. I feel as if I am back at square one, and it is very frustrating.

My question is, could it be the clay? Could it be too hard? Could it be the wheel? I could use any suggestions!

Thanks,

Jennifer

Jennifer, it could be several things: If your wheel is unbalanced it
could be a problem. People do not always wedge their clay and that is a
very important thing to do with porcelain. You need to get an even moist
through out your ball of clay. That counts for all kinds of clay, but
more so for porcelain. When you wedged the clay, put the ball of clay on
it's side on your wheel head. That puts the particles already in the
right direction and that should decrease your wedging time. If you have
experience with porcelain, you would know the clay is very "thirsty".
Another thing that you have to look at is if your position that you are
sitting at your new wheel is the same as your previous position.
I doubt it that the clay that you are using contains nephline syenite,
but if it does, that would be a riller.
Hope this helps you.
