soaking reed and getting discoloration

Well-since we've been talking basketry suppliers here-Let me mention Sheila
Clennell's handle making video which helped me immensely to get my confidence
up in attempting handles. You of course can purchase it through
sourcherrypottery.com.

I've been enjoying using combinations of cane, reed, wires, queen palm (free in
Florida) and recently found that the imitation Dacron sinew really can hold
things firmly when you need that.

Have a question though-Being in Florida yucky things do like to grow.
I've had problems with my cane turning grey as it soaks and it's
inconsistent. Tried many different approaches:

Deionized water for soaking-I admit I haven't tried distilled water
soaking in plastic container rather than metal
have tried bleach in soaking water, maybe not enough though?
Have tried no bleach, deionized water, plastic container and weighted down
with a plate in the microwave for several 2 minute sessions-which actually
works pretty well to get the reed soft.

Do I need to go for some algicide (non-copper) or one of the products we've
been discussing in glazes?

Orlando,FL (where it looks strange because we aren't used to seeing all our
trees losing the leaves at once from the wind. Usually the old leaves are
pushed off by the new leaves, tree by tree here. Awful lot more sky here now.)

Saw a treefrog jump onto the side of my tent at Pioneer Days yesterday. He
seemed to have been inspecting the frog motifs on some pottery inside my
tent!Thank you to Mel? and some others who suggested a little extra gift for good
customers. Although I make little money on this show, and the people don't
spend that much-I've got several wonderful people who've come back every year to
find me and bought something and have been so good for my ego. They have
become faces I look forward to seeing myself-whether they purchase or not. They
were so pleased to get a little extra bowl, and I could tell that small
gesture on my part made them feel special too. Thanks so much for the suggestion.
