low fire glaze wash

updated wed 6 oct 04

I have a receipe for a black (and brown) wash for high fire. However, I do
not have one for low fire. Can I use a low fire glaze and just wash off
what I don't want? My pieces are plaques with figures highlighted and I
just want the details to have a black wash highlighting them (not the whole
piece glazed). If anyone has a receipe for low fire black or brown wash I'd
really like to have it. Thank you so much in advance. Linda Marcoux

Linda,

For low fire staining and washes, I dilute commercial underglazes with water
until they are very thin. The underglazes are then brushed on with a soft
brush. I use a sponge to remove excess color. I prefer Amaco Velvet
Underglazes, but have also used Stroke and Coat. Using underglazes gives
you a huge range of color, and most brands can be bought in small (2 oz)
sizes for testing and experimentation.

Lowfire glazes will also work watered down and brushed on. There will often
be a little gloss in areas of deep texture where the thinned out glaze has
gotten thicker (that is, if you are using a gloss gaze). I have also
applied non-watered down glaze and wiped off the excess. This can also work
well, but the wiping is more time consuming. Be sure to rinse out your
sponge often and it will go faster. However, my sense is that you will not
get as much detail in the texture if you are using this method (of course,
it depends on the thickness of your glaze, amount of transparency, etc).
Make a few small tiles that you can test with each method.

Linda,
You can use a low fire black glaze as a washjust remember that if you
leave any area a little too thick you will have a glassy glaze surface.
Another way is to use some black under glaze. Test it to be sure, Mike

I use a commercial glaze made by Mayco, it's called Tuxedo
and its part of their stroke and coat line.

I just dilute it with water and then sponge it on and wipe back.

You have to be careful not to get it too thin or it will be more blue than
black..i suspect it's loaded with cobalt.
