Dear Friends,
Must say that my brain did not go into overdrive on this one but today
the penny dropped.
Do we really mean "Heat Sink" ? Should we really be talking about a
"Thermal Ballast"?
A "Heat Sink" is a device used to act as place where heat can be taken
a place where it would be a nuisance to be disposed of safely where it
would cause no harm.
This means there has to be a pathway along which the heat can travel,
a material such as Silver or Copper which has high thermal
conductivity and a device which will radiate this heat into the
environment where it can do no damage, such as fins with a large
surface area perhaps with a fan to assist. Each and every computer has
these things in it to stop the chips from cooking. (i like that twist
on words ! )
A "Heat Ballast" or "Thermal Ballast" is a device which retains heat
in large quantities so that it can be radiated, conducted or convected
into the surrounding space and to nearby objects with the intention of
keeping things in equilibrium or an a steady temperature state.
This can be done in a kiln by placing ware in Saggers or by placing
blocks of dense refractory around the periphery of a pot which might
be affected because parts of it do not have sufficient thermal mass to
maintian a steady temperature or a slow cooling rate.
Hope that clarrifies things.
Best Regards,
Ivor Lewis.
