Hay Crew,
Another problem I noticed while using the foot pedal of my Brent was
cramps or spasms in my calf. When I'd take a break my leg still felt
weard. Then I tryed placing the foot pedal on the right hand corner of
the wheel and use it as a hand pedal. All I do to adjust the speed is
tap it with my finger. My feet are free to move around under the wheel
with out stumbling over the pedal. Kinda like one of those Fung Shuay
things of a freeing the energy flow under foot.

Sitting and throwing for extended periods of time is not good for the legs
and back. Especially with your foot operating the foot pedal constantly.
Need to stop and stretch the muscles in the back of the legs. Stand on one
foot, put the other foot up on the wedging table. Lean and bend towards the
foot on the table. Grab the toes. Repeat on the other side. My arthroscopy
surgeon, who I have a scheduled knee fix up later this fall says that he
sees leg and knee injuries from just sitting too long. Common occurrences in
accountants and long haul truck drivers. So I stretch my leg muscles several
times during the day when throwing. If I don't I lock up. Ice the knee at
night. Hopefully finding some relief for the knee soon.

I have relieved almost all of my back and leg problems by doing two simple
things. First, I raised my wheel by using concrete blocks, I sit on a
barstool to throw. Second, I intentionally force myself to get up
periodically by arranging my studio in such a way that everything is not
within easy reach when I am at the wheel. For example, I may wedge up 10-20
balls of clay but only bring 3 or 4 at a time to the wheel. This forces me
to get up several times per hour. Not the most efficient method, but is has
made a huge difference.

Best wishes,
Meryl (Loveland, CO)
