damp soda ash

I am simply curious. I had a small amount left in my soda ash bucket
and left it well covered all summer. I hadn't been
in any regular fashion for much of the summer so I didn't
run the dehumidifier although my studio can be cool and I suppose
needing dehumidifying. With a fresh purchase of soda ash, I opened
the bucket and the little bit left from late June had deliquesced.
Can this be explained? It certainly isn't necessary to know to go on working
since I washed out the bucket and dried it before refilling, but
why did this happen? I don't believe it had become damp any other summer.
Just curious.
