painting on relief tiles -- need help!

I am painting relief tiles, and I am trying to figure out if there
is a special technique to use in order to see the grain or lines
that are embedded in the impression.

So, if I have a leaf, and I want to see the veins of the leaf after
it is painted, glazed and fired, how do I do that? It seems that
only rarely does this happen. Most of the time, the paint just
covers everything and makes it one solid object OR if I put the
paint on lightly, then the brushstrokes are OBVIOUS. How do I get
around this? I have seen tiles where you can see the embedded grain
in the object, but I can seem to duplicate it.

I currently use Duncan Concepts Paint with Ceramichrome Clear
glaze. Am I using the wrong paint or glaze? Or is there a way to
put the paint on lightly withOUT seeing all of the brushstrokes?

Any input would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Thank You!

Sherri,
I like tiles too and really love the pressed tiles
from the late 1800's. These had beautiful art relief and were
usually glazed all one color with beautiful transparent glazes. The color
would pool in the deeper areas and look darker, which would
further enhance the dimension of the design.

When I want more than one color on a tile I use underglazes like stain,
thinned so they will flow into the depressions like water colors. This can
also be
done with oxides, then a clear glaze overall.

It is difficult to keep the detail of your impressions with thick
underglazes
or an opaque glaze, the detail would be hidden.

I hope others reply, everything I know about tiles I've gotten from reading
and experimentation and enjoy hearing what other tile makers are doing.

If you use Duncan EZ Strokes as the underglaze and then glaze with clear,=

the details should show up. I have done this at cone 6 and cone 10 with
success.

Good luck.
