I just bought new thermocouples for Skutt 1227. New one cost $10.00 =
each. Last time I bought they were $44.00 each. Called Skutt. Kiln =
tech says new ones are very accurate and good for about 40 firings. I =
fire to Cone 6.
Skutt also has upgrade thermocouple for $200.00. You also have to send =
your controller off to be upgraded if you use these. Kiln tech says =
they last forever and anything that is promised to last forever sounds =
wonderful.
Anyone out there have experience with the $200.00 ones?
Forever is a long time.

One thing the tech may not have mentioned is that the Type S thermocouples
are extremely thin thermocouples which are encased in porcelain protection
tubes. If you bump this thermocouple with a shelf it will break and you
have a $200 replacement instead of $10 . This is the main reason many
production outfits do not use them. If I was loading the kiln myself and
firing to cone 10, or especially working with Crystal glazes, I would use
Type S, no question.
