I believe that i have read and been told that Manzineta is poisonous. So be
careful about chew stick for the birds..

Up here in the mountains, we have a bush/shrub called Manzineta, which is a
beautiful bush, with red bark. If you get it while it is still green, you
can do neato things with it. I make bird stands & chew sticks for my 6
parrots, and also drill it for hanging my stained glass in creating my
windchimes. Anyone ever heard of/seen any of this shrub? It grows wild in
Southern Calif, and also up here in Arizona. Some consider it a nuscance(?),
but I have always loved the sight and feel of the bark.

Manzanita - little apple. It's a gorgeous wood, very very hard, but I'm
told it's illegal to harvest it in California.

christy in connecticut, who visited her friend in San Diego this year
and was struck by how beautiful this wood was and wanted to bring some
home for handles, only to be told the above.
