I'm working temporarily in a studio where I pay a monthly fee. A woman came
in and created the exact piece she had seen on the DIY show. She had her
husband make a wooden form for draping the clay and even decorated it the
same way Bill did. I thought he might like to know this and I wonder how
many others are doing the same.

I'm from Maryland as well. Bill does alot of workshops around here-he's =
a wonderful, open and generous teacher as well as dynamic workshop leader=
Every time he does a workshop, there's a spate of 'look-a-likes'. I'v=
e seen the same thing every time ANYBODY leads a workshop. The best advi=
ce I ever got (and it now hangs on my wall in a very prominent place) is:=
IMITATE, ASSIMILATE, INNOVATE! I take it this way: imitate means to le=
arn (basic skill); assimilate is to understand (craftsmanship); and innov=
ate means to create your own work (artistry and creativity). The problem=
arises when people don't go beyond steps one or two, although even that =
usually resolves itself over time or when people don't acknowledge their =
sources (plagiarism) . I mean, how long can you really make the exact sa=
me thing without going nuts. (I'm talking long term here, not a productio=
n run). =20
Karin in MD
usually a lurker, but am so thrilled to have time in my studio again its =
leaking out everywhere.
