teflon slip

Clayart Experts,
I recenty saw some very impressive, simple porcelain plates, glazed on
the top side and coated with what appeared to be a black slip on the
bottom. Although I wasn't mentally prepared to examine them closely, I
recall no evidence of scarring on the bottom from the kiln shelf. Come to
think of it, the surface color and character(gloss/matt)did resemble
teflon.
Any ideas as to what the black finish was ??
