Hay crew,G. in da U.P.,
Was it here someone inquired about graphite brick? In my wanderings for
refractories I found ramable castables containing graphite had a
cautionary in application only in a reduction atmosphere as oxidation
will cause deteriation. Therefore, not a good idea in a variable
atmosphere kiln. I can find the link if you need.

Tony,

The thermal conductivity of graphite may be a little higher than you might
think - 3 to 5 times greater than MgO. Other tables show carbon having a
thermal conductivity about one third that of silver. (!?) 1000 times
greater than IFB.

Regardless of how cheap they are, there may be some significant limitation
for their use. Graphite will burn, must not easily. Part of the burning
material at the Chernobyl reactor was graphite moderator blocks. Usually,
graphite is difficult to ignite and does not easily sustain combustion,
witness the electrodes for arc lights which reach temperatures of several
thousand degrees and then do not continue burning when the current is
removed.

Having an area of graphite bricks in the side of an IFB kiln could be a lot
like having a window there.
