new hamer edition

I'm still using my First Printing of the First Edition, from
1975. It's 349 pages, and cost $25.00.

The funny thing about the First Edition is that it is authored only by
Frank Hamer, but dedicated to Janet Hamer.
I guess Janet added the 51 pages between 1975 and 1997.

Hi Everyone,

I hope we will all give serious consideration to buying this book from
one of our own instead of the big box stores or amazon.com.

Try Cindi Anderson of http://www.bigceramicstore.com or Howard Axner at
http://www.axner.com or Steven Branfman of the Potter's Shop
(781-449-7687). In the UK it would be Steve Mills of Bath Potters
Supplies -- http://www.bathpotters.co.uk/

All are Clayart members who deserve our support. Their prices are
usually pretty competitive, but even if they are a couple bucks (or
pounds or Euros or whatever) more let's support our own instead of big,
impersonal businesses. You will also find their stock and service
generally superior to the megabusinesses.

If I have missed any Clayart members who sell this book please speak
up--it was not my intent to do so--the above people are the ones who
just popped into my head.

Regards,

John

Hi Joe,

I've had it on order (the 5th edition) for a month, or more. Its apparently
out but I have yet to see my copy. Very much looking forward to it. Amazon
still quotes 1-2 month lead time. Last time I checked Penn press had not
updated their site on it yet - they also quote long lead. Couple of weeks
back, Amazon did not even have an up to date cover photo for it.

Did you get a new edition or does your "I enjoy it very much" refer to the
earlier ed. ?

Thanx

I know that Janet gets very cross when it is referred to as "Frank's book"
and I got the impression from both that they worked on it together. In fact
I may well be wrong, but I have a feeling Janet started the work.

Sexism alive and well in 1975? It's all semantics - but I think Janet
Kaiser, for one, will know. Should anyone care out there.

A very good point. My local supplier of materials and such reports he's
having a difficult ttime and I'm sure its so all over. Support for such
businesses is important I think, for many reasons, online or brick and
mortar.

On the book thing. It is, as far as I can tell, generally the case that
non-ceramics sources rarely have anywhere near the selection of those
dedicated to ceramics. And as you say they will go further for you and will
compete with other sources. That said, they were not posting the information
as early as those in the book trade.

D.:

I'm glad you asked that specific question: No one jumped ahead of
you. My revelry is in regard to the 4th editon. I'm waiting for the 5th
myself!! You know I saw the amazon 1-2 months thing and thought it
was a misprint. And didn't order that version because I didn't like to
see the order time as a typo. So I thought I'd wait, and in the meantime
bought the 4th.
---
The stir should help bring new orders to the Hamers.
---
The wait is unsettling however.
---
I do recommend boning up a few extra sterling or dollars and buy
through the pottery outfits. That was a great request.

You never know what brings a lurker out. Sexism in the US. Frank
wanted to share!! You know secretly it's really HIS book. --Kidding. just
fanning the flames. Something each of you is familiar with. _Joe

Hi Joe,

and anyone interested this book. I checked with BigCeramicStore.com the
other day and they responded very quickly, saying that it (Hamer and Hamer,
Edition the 5th) had been delayed three times already. They currently expect
it sometime after June 1. The book is supposed to be in the distributors
warehouse by May 15th ie. should be there already. Due to these delays they
have not finalised their pricing for it.

Yes, I had a copy of the same edition as David H. (lent out but
never returned some years back :o( and I referred to it when I
wrote to them for the first time some years ago. Janet H. very
swiftly pointed out that the dictionary is "Hamer AND Hamer", a
joint effort and that she does a lot more than just make coffee
and type up the notes! I do not think Janet would mind me saying
I was taken aback for being take to task on it, HOWEVER, the
explanation lies in the "macho emerging craftsman" climate of the
1970s and remains really simple...

Yes, the reason for the original "omission" was simply "politic",
because in those days a woman was NOT taken seriously at any
level. Whether as a theorist or author of technical works here in
the UK (and elsewhere) she was never published in her own right
and what was perceived as "the little woman's" name rarely
appeared even as co-author, although it most certainly belonged
there nine times out of ten. This whole culture naturally did not
apply to ceramics alone. Just look at the speculation and
controversy surrounding Mr & Mrs. Albert Einstein!?

I am thinking of another ceramic dictionary too... From pretty
much the same time... Robert Fournier's. I bet Sheila should have
been included as a major contributor at the very least. Even my
beloved Mick Casson could have allowed his partner (also called
Sheila) a more prominent exposure, if not outright credit... At
least I think/presume so. The only example of a man and wife
co-authoring must surely be the Davis'? I am not sure, but would
hazard a guess that it was pretty unique right up to quite recent
times. Even now a "Mr. and Mrs." listing somehow lacks kudos and
gravitas, so married women use their maiden or artist names to
retain a true equal status within the partnership. Strange, isn't
it?

Yes, there are some outstanding cases for "giving credit, where
credit is due". In the Hamers` case, Janet was forceful enough to
insist on her own rightful place in the scheme of things. She
gets very cross when people underestimate her contribution. No
she was not mentioned at all initially, but was officially from
around the 2nd or 3rd edition apparently. The current / most
recent edition was apparently delayed by the editor or proof
reader or some other person at the publishing house. At least
that was the news I last received on the subject in their chatty
annual/Christmas letter.

BTW this is a true "new edition" and not just a reprint of the
4th edition with a few extra illustrations. They both spent a lot
of time on it right up to submission in the summer last year. Due
to delays beyond their control it was out of date before it hit
the presses. Always is due to the new papers, research, etc.
being published all the time. I really admire them both for even
attempting to keep up! Just imagine 30 years of updating their
seminal work!?!? This is just two potters who work in a shared
studio space, doing their own work and exhibiting then in a
parallel universe they research, take notes and then write it all
down... Not a computer in sight. All from notes and reports, true
research hard work, slogging away year in, year out...

THAT IS TRUE DEDICATION FOLKS!!!

Sincerely

Janet Kaiser
